Patrick O'Brien was born and raised in Dublin, where he now lives. He spent many years working and studying in England and on the continent, returning to Ireland in 1996 where he was invited to teach in Trinity College Dublin.
In the same year, he set up a studio and workshop conveniently located in Dublin's city centre. Patrick runs Pottery, Ceramic Art and Sculpture courses at this studio on a regular basis.
He also gives courses for teachers who have studied art, but have not specialised in ceramics, and is often consulted by Art and Design students when they have special difficulty with some aspect of pottery and ceramic work, for example a problem with wheel-throwing, glaze application, kiln firing schedule, etc.
He has a special interest in glazes and glazing techniques, developing and compounding his own glazes for use in the workshops.
Patrick is currently in the process of building a gas kiln for use in the new, larger studio, which he hopes to build in the near future. Residential courses will be held there; weekend and week-long events.
Courses to be covered include:
- Raku firing and glazes, Reduction
- Soda Raku
- Building a raku kiln
- Salt glazes and firing
- Wheel work
A number of other courses will be run by well-known international ceramists and artists.
